SERIES Venture Bros. - Season 1 - DVD detelecined - [SVT-AV1 4.0.1 - RF 19 very slow preset]

I quickly fell in love with this show and its humor, but i found out that the modern versions on streaming look like ass. They're full of deinterlacing artifacts and are also cropped and squashed for some reason. The deinterlace artifacts perplex me, because this show is mostly telecined, and uses very little interlacing. DVD also has commentary which is nice.

For those who don't know, telecining is a process of taking a source with 23.976 frames, and converting them to 29.97 or 25. This was done to ensure older playback compatibility, because if they haven't done that, some systems would play the video faster than intended. Detelecining removes those extra frames, resulting in clean picture quality. What about interlacing though? Interlacing takes half of the vertical resolution, and replaces them with lines. Deinterlacing is much more complicated, it's more computationally expensive, and relies on guess work which can result in visual artifacts. This show uses very little interlacing. After watching it i estimate that 1% is actually interlaced, rest is just telecined. However the people that were behind the versions on streaming likely weren't aware of this, just assumed that it's interlaced, and deinterlaced everything. This results in very inconsistent picture quality. Here's a fun comparison showing the official version on Amazon and the detelecined DVD. You be the judge

Though to be fair, the Streaming versions do have a sweet 224kbps E-AC3 audio track, while the DVD just has 192kbps AC3. I thought about replacing the DVD audio with the one on streaming, but it was a headache so i didn't bother.

The pilot episode on the DVD doesn't feature any telecining or interlacing, but is instead poorly deinterlaced. It looked awful, so i just dropped the vertical resolution by half.
