"December Skies" is a song by British musician Steven Wilson. The single was released exclusively on his YouTube channel on December 14, 2023, marking his first-ever Christmas song. The track was created after a friend challenged Wilson to write a festive song, a task he initially doubted he could accomplish due to his artistic style being "way too miserable" for a joyful Christmas song. To overcome this, Wilson used the AI interface ChatGPT to generate lyrics, instructing it to avoid direct mentions of Christmas and instead evoke a feeling of loneliness and introspection. The resulting lyrics, while crafted by AI, align with Wilson's poetic sensibilities, featuring imagery of winter stillness, such as "In the hush of a long winter’s dream" and "The grip of the frost on the pines".

Steven wrote: "I’m still not entirely sure what I think about AI, the knee-jerk reaction is to consider it a threat to a musician like me, but it’s clearly not going away, so this is my experiment to try embracing it and using it as a tool in the creative process. And of course also to have some fun doing something I would never normally have thought about doing, the archetypal seasonal song. December Skies is the result, swiftly recorded last weekend and written in collaboration with an Artificial Intelligence version of myself. I wonder what people will make of it. I wonder what I make of it."

Musically, "December Skies" blends elements of traditional Christmas hits with Wilson's signature progressive rock sound, incorporating acoustic guitars, echoed vocals, sleigh bells, a harmonium, orchestral strings, rich backing vocals, and a key change. The song features a standout guitar solo and backing vocals by Randy McStine, known for his work with Wilson on recent Porcupine Tree tours.

In keeping with the artificial intelligence theme, the visualiser for December Skies has also been generated using a purpose built AI system created by Miles Skarin. The video is based on imagery drawn from some of my previous videos then placed into 2D and 3D backdrops.
