Personally, I really like using MakeMKV. It can copy both DVDs and Blu-rays to your computer without any problems. The program is only free for the first 30 days, but I always uninstall it before the trial period expires, and when I install it again later, I can use the full 30-day trial once more. So, in practice, it's basically free to use indefinitely.

There isn't much you have to do with this program. Just insert a DVD or Blu-ray into your internal or external DVD/Blu-ray drive and open MakeMKV. The program should automatically detect the disc. All you have to do is click the icon showing a folder with a green arrow:

The following window will then open:

It's important to check the "Decrypt video files" box so that the DVD's copy protection (usually CSS - Content Scramble System) is removed. That's all.

If your DVD already has scratches and you're unsure whether it can still be read correctly to create a flawless backup, I can recommend the program VSO Inspector.

When you open the program, you'll see this:

The important part is the "Scan" tab. This is where the program reads the DVD and checks whether the entire disc can be read without errors:

Anything marked in red means that there is an error on that part of the disc. The more of these errors there are, the higher the chance that the backup will contain the same errors as well:

Ideally, the program shouldn't show any red at all. Small, barely noticeable scratches are usually not a problem.

Nice guide, Hard Hardy! On the topic of MakeMKV's free trial though, I would like to add that you can get a key from this link when the software asks for one and you can continue using it afterward. However, the key is renewed periodically so when the software prompts for a key again, just head over to the same link and grab the new key.
