It is not a downmix of Sony 360 Reality Audio's 22.2 audio channels; there are no Taylor Swift albums with that technology. In this case, the decoder takes the E-AC-3 JOC 5.1 file (which is the file prepared for public transmission, not the raw Dolby Atmos file) and reads the sounds and their spatial coordinates. With that information, it reconstructs an immersive mix in the target layout or bed (for example, 9.1.6). This involves “mapping” the objects to physical or virtual speakers according to the chosen configuration.

These virtual speakers are then placed inside a multichannel WAV file that contains no metadata or Dolby Atmos information; it is pure PCM with 16 audio channels. Many decoders only read the E-AC-3 base layer (5.1/7.1) and do not interpret the JOC metadata correctly. The result is that Atmos objects are poorly mapped or ignored altogether. When exporting to a layout such as 9.1.6, the decoder must “place” dynamic objects in fixed channels. If the algorithm is not faithful to Dolby's, it can distribute the sound energy poorly. Some unofficial or experimental decoders do not implement all of the Joint Object Coding logic, which generates artifacts, phase cancellations, or loss of clarity.

These “weird sound” issues are not file errors, but rather how the decoder interprets and renders Atmos objects. Only Dolby-licensed decoders guarantee accurate reconstruction; others may give inconsistent results.
