Description

Pivot en or massif, voire en platine, qui a fait basculer Metallica dans la catégorie des monstres sacrés, permettant au groupe de dépasser les frontières du thrash pour fricoter avec le rock au sens le plus large du terme, le Black Album souffle ses trente bougies sans qu’une ride ne semble avoir terni un son qui a traversé les décennies avec succès. Un disque qui bouscule autant le groupe, alors à l’origine de quatre albums aussi féroces que rapides, que les fans, souvent perplexes après avoir découvert cette perle noire lors de sa sortie. Trois ans auparavant, Metallica dégainait ...And Justice for All, dont la production perfectible a souvent desservi son contenu (notamment à cause d’un mix qui occulte complètement la basse de Jason Newsted) et sur lequel planait encore le douloureux deuil vécu par les musiciens après la disparition du bassiste originel, Cliff Burton, en 1986.

Les Four Horsemen décident alors de sortir de leur zone de confort en recrutant Bob Rock, à l’origine du son énorme du Dr. Feelgood de Mötley Crüe qui leur a fait forte impression. Le producteur canadien va bousculer les acquis et rebattre les cartes. Il bâtit un mur de guitares gigantesque, remet la basse en avant, fait enregistrer le groupe live et se débrouille pour qu’il adopte un accordage plus bas sur certains morceaux. Après des mois de travail dans la douleur et parfois l’incompréhension, le combo finit par mettre la touche finale à un disque sobrement intitulé… Metallica. Son visuel, on ne peut plus sombre, lui vaudra le surnom de Black Album, terme qui deviendra son appellation plus ou moins officielle avec le temps et par la force des choses.

La surprise fut totale dès le lancement d’Enter Sandman, premier single (et première plage du disque) sorti deux mois avant l’album en guise d’amuse-gueule. Metallica livre une chanson massive, à la limite du mid-tempo, qui doit plus au heavy et gros rock burné qu’au thrash qui avait jusqu’alors fait sa réputation. Les ondes de nombreuses radios s’ouvrent à lui. Le groupe réussira même à flirter avec les sommets des classements des titres les plus passés en radio en 1992 grâce à la ballade Nothing Else Matters. La ballade… une autre nouveauté proposée par le gang de la Bay Area. Car tout a changé ou presque. Loin des longs morceaux épiques qui ont forgé son style au fil des albums, Metallica délivre désormais des chansons plus courtes, moins complexes mais à l’efficacité redoutable. Sad But True impose une lourdeur sans pareille qui évoque plus Black Sabbath que les débuts sauvages du groupe à la limite du punk. Le reste de l’album favorise ce type d’ambiances, à la fois écrasantes et toujours empreintes d’une certaine forme de groove saturé (Wherever I May Roam, My Friend of Misery).

Si les fidèles de la première heure commencent par crier au scandale, leurs voix ne réussiront jamais à se faire entendre plus fortement que celles des nouveaux millions de fans que les quatre musiciens vont se faire grâce à ce classique du metal qui va poser les bases d’un genre devenu plus accessible et leur ouvrir les portes des stades du monde entier. Metallica n’est plus simplement un des leaders du thrash aux côtés de Slayer ou Megadeth, il est désormais le mastodonte incontournable du heavy capable de remplir des arènes en un accord de puissance. Trente ans après sa sortie, le Black Album s’est écoulé à plus de trente millions d’exemplaires. On ne peut lutter contre un tel score qui prouve que la majorité a su entendre toutes ses qualités intrinsèques. Ce classique un temps conspué par certains (tout du moins à ses débuts) a non seulement prouvé qu’il était un album solide, mais a fini par être accepté par tous, devenant au passage un incontournable du classic rock au même titre que les plus grands disques de Led Zeppelin, AC/DC ou Deep Purple.

Parce que Metallica a toujours été généreux avec ses fans, son Black Album revisité en version Deluxe Box Set est un véritable coffre aux trésors blindé de surprises, flirtant avec les 200 titres. De quoi réaliser une immersion totale grâce à des enregistrements réalisés en studio (riffs isolés, versions démos, répétitions pour les pré-production), des mises à plat, des mixes alternatifs… et bien entendu, une flopée de performances live réalisées entre 1991 et 1993 captées au cours de la tournée qui a suivi et qui viennent prouver, une fois encore, que le groupe était avant tout une machine de guerre sur scène et ce wherever they may roam. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
