HAPPY 24TH BIRTHDAY, INVINCIBLE (released on October 29, 2001)!

The Invincible album and its era were infamously overshadowed by a public dispute between Michael Jackson and his record label, Sony. After enduring the physically grueling HIStory tour, where he had to perform even while suffering from severe laryngitis and other health complications, Michael decided he would not tour again for this album.

Following six years of meticulous work and repeated delays, Invincible was finally completed. However, Sony was reportedly underwhelmed by the final product. The label believed that a world tour was essential to recoup their investment, as they lacked confidence in the commercial potential of the seven singles Michael had personally chosen. These were: Unbreakable (intended as the lead single with a cinematic short film), You Rock My World, Cry, Butterflies, Speechless, Whatever Happens, and Break of Dawn. Speechless was released as a promotional single only, while Break of Dawn was later included on the Number Ones compilation album two years afterward. Michael also mentioned to Elizabeth Taylor during a phone conversation that he had plans for Threatened, possibly another short film.

Ultimately, only You Rock My World and Cry received anything close to a proper release. All planned photo sessions for the album were cancelled, and much of the promotional budget was cut. This is why the single covers ended up being simple crops of the album artwork.

I’ve done my best to restore some of this album’s lost dignity by creating some custom single covers that reflect the care and artistry Michael originally intended. Of course, you’re free to revert to the original versions if you prefer, but I wanted to share the reasoning behind these changes. You’ll also find that several of the unreleased single choices appear as B-sides on the custom releases.

Speechless was released as a promo single in 2001 with the Jay-Z Remix of You Rock My World as b-side. The Explicit Version of that remix has yet to surface. The Darkchild Remix of You Rock My World has sadly not leaked in lossless quality.
Album Edit #2 of You Rock My World has a noticeable editing flaw at the beginning. The first beat is abruptly cut off.

Bonus:

• Butterflies - Single Mix [S.I.N. Version] (04:37) S.I.N. Salute To America Urban / Hip Hop Edition - New Music Program #91 [US Promo CD - S.I.N. – ]

A genuine Butterflies Radio Edit is not known to exist, so I decided to create one myself. Butterflies was released to U.S. radio on November 1, 2001. A commercial single was planned for release on January 15, 2002, but it was ultimately cancelled. I also included Fly Away as the B-side, mirroring the addition of Streetwalker to the single release of Cry.

2002.02.04 Unbreakable [Promo Only – Cancelled]

1. Unbreakable - Radio Edit (04:39) Unbreakable [FR Promo CDr - Epic – ] (2002)
2. Unbreakable (06:25) Invincible [EU 1st Press CD - Epic 495174 2] (2001)
3. Whatever Happens (04:56) Invincible [EU 1st Press CD - Epic 495174 2] (2001)

After Sony refused to support the earlier singles and even appeared to sabotage them, Michael planned to relaunch the campaign with a self-financed single and short film for Unbreakable. For unknown reasons, he never followed through with these plans, and the single release scheduled for February 4, 2002, was ultimately cancelled. I chose to include Whatever Happens as the B-side to highlight another potential single that never came to fruition.

I decided to include Break of Dawn and the live edit of Ben as B-sides, since they served as the "bonus tracks" on an otherwise redundant compilation. It's kinda sad when you realize that this was his final proper single release...
