HOME»COMMENT»COLUMNISTS»BRYONY GORDON Lady Gaga: an over-hyped star for the 21st century The attention-seeking pop singer Lady Gaga is the ultimate triumph of style over substance, argues Bryony Gordon. By Bryony Gordon 10:44AM GMT 12 Dec 2009 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/...-an-over-hyped-star-for-the-21st-century.html His conclusion: "When she appeared earlier this year on Jonathan Ross's chat show, she said almost nothing, instead choosing to sip from a cup of tea. Perhaps we should applaud her refusal to play ball with Ross, but I have a sneaking suspicion that her shortness was probably down to the fact that she had nothing to say. You have to wonder what the clothes are hiding, rather than expressing. The wacky dressing screams: "I'm mad, me." But I bet that under all that slap, Stefani Joanne Germanotta – you can see why she changed the name now, can't you? – is actually really boring. Oh yes, the music. Well, it's pretty good, I think, and she has a fantastic voice. But it's difficult to pay much attention to it, because you're too transfixed by the fact that she seems to have been dressed by a blacksmith on an acid trip. That's a shame. But perhaps Gaga is the perfect pop star to sum up the 21st century so far: over-the-top, hyped up, and the ultimate triumph of style over substance." mikedreams 2017-11-04: Well firstly quite clearly this guy was in the minority that year. Considering that this commentary was written at the end of 2009, a year Gaga owned. Yes, her style was wildly triumphant, but so too her substance was in boundless abundance. Secondly, was he even watching the same interview as me? Note: this is maybe Gaga's second national TV interview, her first in the UK, and it lasts almost a full ten minutes. But her seeming laid-back approach shows respect and care for the host and audience. Like Lady Diana says in an interview released this year, "But the rebel thing was always there." This here lady also shows she cares passionately about what she is daring enough to have plenty to say and sing about. She is one smart cookie that doesn't crumble. This is touching and endearing, expressive and impressive, one of my favorite Gaga interviews. First the 'Jonathan Ross Piano Lounge Singers' warmly welcome Lady Gaga onto the set with a quick bit of Queen's Radio Gaga. As for Ross, the interviewer shows respect, but clowns around and teases Gaga. He is so over the top. So she gets to be the straight woman to his joker. And Gaga for the most part plays along, but also gives some minor burns back. We can't help but be charmed by the beauty of her light and erudite innocence and sweetness. But she isn't fooling anybody nor is she trying. The cool calm and collected togetherness comes from the tart smart heart of this Miss Gaga. The lady for good measure throws in some silly but knowing looks and comments here and there, reminding us of classic Barbara 'Funny Girl/Pussycat' Streisand. When pressed Gaga flat out admits there is a rumor that she has a 'donkey dick.' And then later she explains how she used to carry around a fog machine in her purse, and then she would "fog herself." All we here is Lady Barbara Gaga. Hidden Content: You must either reply or click 'Like' to see the hidden information contained here.
